Every time someone who hasn’t seen me in a while sees me now, the expression on their face is priceless… lol. It’s an amazing feeling really. The joy of being able to achieve what a lot of people have tried to achieve but haven’t, what I have failed at several times and then finally succeed.
The next thing that follows is a question – ‘what did you do?’. And then before I’m able to say anything, I hear ‘Exercise right?’ or ‘Do you exercise a lot?’ Some don’t even ask and say something like ‘your exercise game is on point’.
Some people think to lose weight you have to spend hours in the gym. Don’t get me wrong, exercise is good for the health. Research has shown that exercise can help with mental health, cognitive health, sleep quality, cancer prevention, immune function, high blood pressure and life span extension.
When it comes to weight loss, exercise plays very little role. Exercise is more important in weight maintenance than weight loss. That’s where its effect really shines. So, it may be good to imbibe exercise habits during the weight loss phase so it becomes a part of you when you get to weight maintenance. However, I don’t recommend this and I’ll explain my reasons.
What Do I Recommend?
Dietary change is the single most important thing you must do if you want to lose weight. Check out my post on Best Way To Lose Weight Without Going Crazy to learn the changes to make. Other things like sleep, MOVING MORE, etc. also have their place, but the diet is the most important. Changing your diet involves a lot of commitment and discipline, so does establishing an exercise routine. Taking up these two feats at the same time can be very overwhelming and chances of giving up on both are very high. What I’ll recommend you do is focus on what is going to add most to the result you are trying to achieve – DIETARY CHANGE.
If you noticed, earlier I mentioned moving more as opposed to exercise. As you start your weight loss journey, focus on your diet and then MOVE MORE.
HOW TO MOVE MORE:
- Use the stairs instead of the elevator.
- Get up to pick up stuff you need instead of sending someone.
- Don’t sit for more than 30 mins at a stretch even at work. Get up do 2 squats, walk to the door, and back to your seat.
- Run around with the kids.
- While sitting to watch TV, move your hands around using a small dumbbell 1kg or so is fine.
- Take a walk with your significant other or a friend.
- Go for prayer walks.
- Dance, be happy. Happiness is free
You get the idea. Just move! As you get lighter and have the desire for more vigorous activities you can join a gym or get exercise equipments. For now, just focus on your diet and move more. If there are days you didn’t move around much, it’s ok. Focus on what’s bringing in most of the result – YOUR DIET. The health benefits of eating healthier and losing weight is way more than that of exercise alone.
Please share with us in the comments other ways you have come up with to move more. To a slimmer and healthier you.
Love you always
